ATA Speaks @ LUBRICANTS Expo 2024
Examining Hardware Design Trends Within EVs and Implications for Lubricant Requirements
The electrification of the automotive industry, and the resulting change in the technology and hardware used in passenger vehicles, is causing new challenges such as bearing currents, increasingly higher speeds and temperatures and compatibility of additives and lubricants with electrical components within the system. This session showcases advances in EV drivetrain technology and the implications for bearing systems and lubrication requirements. Hear from OEMs and Tier 1s about:
Improving energy efficiency of the electric powertrain and extending range and energy generation to recharge batteries using lubricants
Evaluating lubrication requirements of hybrid and electric vehicle components, including motors, powertrains, gears, and bearings
The potential impact of contaminants on lubricant performance in these advanced systems
Additional properties demanded by the application such as thermal management or conductivity

Embark on a journey in powertrain analysis, redefining fluid dynamics in real-time. Delve into precision monitoring, unraveling pressure, temperature, and aeration's interplay. Discover diverse technologies quantifying aeration's effects. Embrace informed decisions with continuous, nonintrusive measurements illuminating fluid behavior. Revolutionizes reliability and efficiency across powertrains and drives by quantifying a key parameter that impacts degradation, heat transfer, and flow dynamics.
ATA Presents thermal management technology to FCA
This past week, we were hand selected alongside 9 other Canadian tech/testing corporations by FCA to present our unique products and services. We were asked to present our fluid/thermal conditioning technology, ATA Horai™. The two day private event was a great opportunity to present our technology but also to granted us great insight into what other great Canadian products and services were on the rise.

Coolant Aeration in EV’s
Coolant aeration has a substantial impact on the thermal efficiency of a cooling system. Poor coolant circuit design and leaks can cause air bubbles to propagate throughout the system, causing localized hot spots. We want to bring this topic to light because it poses challenges that engineers in the test space are experiencing without knowing how to address them.
ATA’s “Understanding Aeration” White paper
Aeration may seem friendly in a cup of coffee or soda, but it's deadly for powertrain components. All forms of aeration (air bubbles, foam and dissolved air) are harmful, especially in the context of hydraulic and lubricating systems. Aeration is not a new phenomenon, but is a growing threat. Engine downsizing, higher combustion temperatures, turbocharging, extended oil drain intervals, high-speed electrified drivetrains and lower viscosity lubricants are all contributors to the phenomenon. This white paper explores the different types of oil aeration, how to measure it and how to simulate it for test purposes.
ATA, Magna International & Haltech host event
This event focused on the case study of ATA Aerify™, a sensor that provides a real-time measurement of oil aeration inside an engine. Advanced Test and Automation (ATA) discussed the process of sensor development from product definition, concept prototyping, realization and commercialization.
A special presentation was given by Magna International on how they establish win-win technology innovation and commercialization partnerships with startups, academic institutions and R&D.
